The new St. Petersburg Arena, formerly known as 'Zenit Arena,' hosted its first official game between local FC Zenit Saint Petersburg and FC Ural on Saturday.

The match was organised in style of American science-fiction adventure film Back to the Future. Hundreds of people unfurled banners with portraits of the main movie characters and important dates for Zenit fans, such as September 20, 1980, considered as the date on which Zenit fan movement was created.

The St. Petersburg Arena (formerly called the Zenit Arena) is reportedly the first stadium with a retractable field in Russia and the fourth in the world. The stadium is able to accommodate up to 68,000 football fans and 80,000 concert visitors. During the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the stadium is expected to host seven football matches. Its construction began in 2007 and cost around 40 billion rubles ($686.8 million/€645.4 million/£550.1 million).

The 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup will be the 10th FIFA Confederations Cup organised by FIFA. It will be held in Russia, from 17 June to 2 July 2017, as a prelude to the 2018 FIFA World Cup which is scheduled to take place later in Russia from June 14 to July 15, 2018. A total of 64 matches will be played in 12 venues located in 11 cities across Russia, with the final set to take place in Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
