France: Fillon promises 'tight administrative control' over the 'Muslim cult'

Republican Party presidential candidate Francois Fillon held what could be his final campaign rally in Lille, Tuesday, less than a week before the French electorate head to the polls on April 23.

Fillon asserted his position on immigration, vowing an "immigration policy fixed by strict quotas."

He added that the economic platform presented by the far-right National Front contender Marine Le Pen will lead to "bankruptcy in six months." As for the far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon, Fillon descried him as "nostalgic to Cuba of Castro." "I choose General De Gaul," he added, to the cheers of his supporters.

Fillon also promised "tight administrative control" over what he called the "Muslim cult" until it is "firmly anchored in the Republic," before adding that France has "been confronted by a new form of totalitarianism, the Islamist totalitarianism."

According to the latest polls, far-right Front National leader Marine La Pen and centrist Emmanuel Macron from En Marche! are joint frontrunners with 23.5 percent, while Fillon trails behind the pair with 18.5%.
