USA: Protesters arrested in rally against LA Sherriff rejecting of 'Sanctuary State' bill

Eight protesters were arrested in Los Angeles, Monday, during a protest outside the L.A. County Sheriff's Department headquarters condemning the cooperation between local law enforcement authorities and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The protest was organised by the grassroots movement Caravan Against Fear. Armando Carmona, the Communications manager of the National Day Labourer Organising Network, explained that the movement's purpose was "to convene community to fight against Trump's racist and fearing angry and rhetoric and policies and elevate policies and practices that are supporting and advancing immigrant rights."

Protester Ted Lewis, the Human Rights Director at Global Exchange, said "a community that will cooperate with law enforcement is a community that feels protected by law enforcement."

Protesters decried Sheriff Jim McDonnell's stance against US Senate Bill 54, dubbed "Sanctuary State" bill, which prevents local and state law enforcement from using their resources to assist in federal immigration enforcement.

The detained protesters had defied police warnings to disperse the protests.

Several protesters were part of a caravan that left Sacramento, California last week and is set to stage protests in numerous cities until it reaches its final destination on the border between Texas and Mexico.

The 'Sanctuary State' bill was passed on April 4 with the support of the Democrats and the disapproval of Republicans, curbing a reported step up in ICE's arrest activities over the past few months in California, where the population of undocumented immigrants ranges between 2.35 and 2.6 million people.
