Turkey: 'Everything reminds me of you' - Erdogan delivers emotional victory speech

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed a rally of supporters in Istanbul on Sunday, following the 'YES' outcome of the Turkish constitutional referendum where 51.4 percent of the electorate voted in favour at 99 percent of the vote counted.

Speaking to the festive rally gathered in Istanbul's Sariyer district, Erdogan told his supporters that they "have written a saga of resurrection".

"I have said that this crowd is a signal flare," the Turkish president said. The rally, in turn, chanted "one nation, one flag, one land, one state" after Erdogan.

In a direct address to his supporters, Erdogan said "We have marched in this road together, we got wet under the same rain together, everything reminds me of you in every song that I am listening to now. I am making a call to the people in front of our place in Kisikli, I salute them and I hug them too."

The 'YES' result means that the new draft constitution, approved by the Turkish parliament last January, will introduce a package of 18 constitutional amendments, paving the way for a presidential system of government.

Turkey's main opposition parties, the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP), were opposed to the reforms, arguing that they would significantly increase Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's power. The incumbent could potentially remain in his role until 2029.
