Egypt: Security tightened around Coptic Church during Easter Feast in Cairo

April 16, 2017 at 19:59 GMT -00:00 · Published

The Egyptian Interior Ministry ramped up security around St Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo during Sunday's Easter Feast service, following recent attacks.

Special police forces were deployed and a security checkpoint was set up outside St Mark's Cathedral, which was cordoned off. Those wishing to enter had their bags checked and were searched by security officers using metal detectors.

The increased security follows recent attacks, including a suicide bomb on April 9, which left 17 worshippers dead. The attack targeted the St Mark's Cathedral in the Mediterranean City of Alexandria, where Coptic Pope Tawadros II was leading a service.

The attack, which has since been claimed by the so-called Islamic State (IS, formally ISIS/ISIL), was part of a twin bombing, the second of which killed at least 27 people in Tanta, in a blast that also targeted a Coptic Christian church.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi declared a three-month state of emergency and ordered soldiers to be deployed across the country to increase security.

The latest attacks are a part of a series of assaults on Egypt's Coptic Christian minority that makes up around ten percent of the population. The assault comes several weeks ahead of Pope Francis' visit to Egypt.
