Hungary: Thousands march in defence of Soros-backed university

Hungary, Budapest
April 13, 2017 at 04:41 GMT -00:00 · Published

Protests continued in Budapest on Wednesday as thousands turned out to demonstrate against last week's approval of legal amendments which target the Central European University (CEU), despite the an offer from the government suggesting a compromise to keep the university open. The CEU was founded in 1991 by billionaire George Soros.

Clashes broke out between police and protesters, many of them students, who marched to the Hungarian parliament.

On Wednesday the Education Secretary Laszlo Palkovics suggested that the CEU could stay open if it offered teaching and degrees through its Hungarian sister school.

The Amendment of the Higher Education Act of 28 places tougher restrictions on foreign universities; it could force the CEU to move from Budapest, as under the law, foreign universities require a campus in the capital and in their home countries. Although the university is registered in New York, its only campus is in Budapest, and therefore could be closed.
