UN: Russia calls for impartial investigation on Syria chemical attack
The UN's draft resolution on an investigation into the Syria chemical attack was vetoed by Russia as it "appointed the government guilty prior to the investigation, prior to an independent and objective investigation", said Russia's deputy United Nations ambassador Vladimir Safronkov at the UNHQ in New York, Wednesday.
"You are afraid of an impartial investigation", Safronkov told the Security Council, "has it become a national sport to intentionally undermine unity?"
US permanent representative to the UN Nikki Haley said that by vetoing the vote "Russia will continue to be isolated."
Moscow vetoed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution calling on Damascus to give UN inspectors access to all government military sites in Syria.
The resolution comes after Syria's Al-Shayrat Airbase was the target of a US Tomahawk missile strike ordered by US President Donald Trump, a direct response to the alleged chemical weapons attack in Khan Sheikhoun near Idlib for which he holds Syrian President Bashar al-Assad responsible.
