Russia: US airstrike on Syria 'contributes to terrorist activity' – Defence Committee chair

Russian Federation, Moscow
April 7, 2017 at 10:41 GMT -00:00 · Published

Chairman of the Russian Federation Council's Defence Committee Viktor Ozerov described the US airstrike on Syria's Shayrat Airbase as "an act of military aggression" that "does not fit within any norms of international law," during an interview in Moscow, Friday.

Ozerov went on to say that a dialogue between Russia and the US is necessary for international security and added that the Russian government is "not going to erect any new kind of Berlin wall between Russia and the US."

"This strike contributes to terrorist activity," continued Ozerov, adding "I think that we will have to make a series of efforts to return the situation to where it was before the US strike on the Syrian air base."

The Shayrat Airbase was the target of a US airstrike ordered by US President Donald Trump's administration. A total of 59 tomahawk missiles were fired at the base in the Homs governorate, at 4:40 local time (00:40 GMT) on Friday. At least six people have been killed in the strikes.

In a press conference, US President Donald Trump confirmed that the strikes were in response to Tuesday's chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun, for which he claimed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was responsible.
