Serbia: 'Protest against dictatorship' continues for a fourth day in Belgrade

Serbia, Belgrade
April 6, 2017 at 22:05 GMT -00:00 · Published

Thousands of people hit the streets of Belgrade, Thursday, for the fourth consecutive day, protesting against the presidential victory of serving Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

Protesters, predominantly students have voiced demands for the resignation of head of the Parliament Maja Gojkovic, saying that during the presidential campaigns she unlawfully adjourned parliament until after Sunday's vote. Other demands include the resignation of the Republic Election Commission for failing to ensure free elections, as well as protesting against media censorship.

Unlike previous days, protesters took a different route marching to the Vuk's monument, passing by Belgrade university buildings and towards the RTS (Serbian State TV) and government building.

During the protest the demonstrators held a moment of silence for the victims of the World War 2 in Serbia, as today marks 76 years since the German army attacked Serbia in the WW2.

The protest was held in other Serbian cities including Novi Sad and will continue tomorrow.

Vucic won Serbia's presidential election by a large margin on Sunday. He avoided a run-off by taking some 55 percent of votes; with Sasa Jankovic coming in second with around 16 percent of the votes and Ljubisa Preltacevic Beli third with around 10 percent.
