Colombia: Mocoa victims fear disease and lack of food at temporary shelter

Residents in Mocoa have sought temporary shelter at the Technological Institute of Putumayo, Wednesday, following the deadly landslide that struck the city on Sunday.

Reportedly around 559 people are currently living in the shelter, as their homes were destroyed by the devastating landslide. They are being accommodated in different rooms, however the lack of space means that some are sleeping on the floor.

The people there are afraid of disease. Macao resident Pedro Patino stressed, ""There are already epidemics. There are children with chicken pox. People suffering asthma, flu, headaches, children with hepatitis."

Another worry is the lack of food, water and ultimately a home. Grandmother Rosalba Cadenas explained, "I need a place to live. I need a home, a security, somewhere I can go with my grandchildren. That is what I need."

On Sunday heavy rains in the Putumayo province caused the Mocoa River and its tributaries to overflow. Mud and water gushed through the city destroying homes and infrastructure while killing hundreds.

The death toll from the avalanche has risen to at least 286 people, with hundreds injured and still missing, according to the Colombian Institute Of Forensic Medicine.
