Kyrgyzstan: A 'smart and educated boy' – ex-teacher remembers suspected St. Petersburg bomber

Kyrgyzstan, On-Adir village, Osh Region

Fatima Kadyrakunova, a former school teacher of Akbarzhon Dzhalilov, the chief suspect in the St. Petersburg metro blast, remembered him as a "straightforward, smart, and educated boy," speaking from the village of On-Adir in the Osh Region, Wednesday.

According to Kadyrakunova, Dzhalilov “would never insult other students”, and “his parents would have never been ashamed of his behaviour.” The suspect studied at a school called Toktogul Satylganov for three years, from 5th to 8th grades.

Recalling Dzhalilov as a child, Yusupjanova said that he was “a good boy, a good one since childhood,” and that she “hadn't seen him do bad things.” She added, “Well, we didn’t see anything wrong with him.”

On Tuesday, Russian Minister of Health Veronika Skvortsova confirmed that 14 people had died with 49 remaining in hospitals after an unidentified explosive device went off between the Institute of Technology and Sennaya Ploschad metro stations at 14:40 local time (11:40 GMT) on Monday.

Dzhalilov is thought to be among the dead. A second unexploded bomb was reportedly deactivated at Ploschad Vostaniya station.

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation into the incident and a three-day period of mourning has been declared by St. Petersburg authorities, which began on Tuesday.
