Russia: 'I don't know how to live'- Widower of St. Petersburg blast victim mourns wife's death

The grieving widower of famed Russian doll-maker Irina Medyantseva gave an emotional account of the events that led up to his wife’s death from St. Petersburg on Tuesday, after she was killed in Monday’s deadly Metro bomb attack.

At the moment of the attack, Medyantseva was seeing off her daughter Alena who was heading home to Velikii Novgorod. When the bomb exploded, Irina selflessly protected Alena by covering her with her body saving her life. Irina’s daughter is now in the intensive care.

“At 14:00 the life was divided – there it was happy, here it is inexplicable. I don’t understand how to live”, - said Alexander Kaminskiy, recalling the day of the attack. The tragic events continue to haunt him, as he blames himself for not calling his wife and daughter: “Maybe my call could have saved them. Just one call, three minutes, they would have stopped. They would have taken the next train.”

Irina Medyantseva was famous in Russia for her hand-made dolls, as she dedicated her life to the art for the last 15 years. Her dolls, with unusual names like Rain, Spring Angels, and Domovoi Senya, were eagerly sought after by collectors.

According to official figures, 14 people have died, with 49 remaining in hospitals after an unidentified explosive device went off between St. Petersburg’s Institute of Technology and Sennaya Ploschad metro stations at 14:40 local time (11:40 GMT) on Monday.

A second unexploded bomb was reportedly deactivated at Ploschad Vosstaniya station.
