France: Parisians hold vigil for St. Petersburg victims, condemn Eiffel Tower flag decision

Mourners laid flowers at a vigil in front of the Russian embassy in Paris, Tuesday, in honour of the victims of the St. Petersburg metro blast. Several mourners expressed anger over the reaction of French authorities to the attack.

One mourner, Victor, said "we just had Francois Hollande who succinctly expressed his solidarity without putting the Russian colours on the Eiffel Tower. We all saw that there are two ways of acting. Are the Russian deaths less worthy of Turkish or Israeli ones? No. This is no more about politics."

Another mourner, Serge, recollected Russian solidarity over the Paris attacks, saying, "I was impressed to see how many people came out in Moscow with flowers. It moved me a lot and I confess that I'm sad to see that there are so few people and most of them are Russian, not too many French. I really don't understand. And I also don't understand why the Eiffel Tower will not be illuminated with the colours of the Russian flag."

Earlier on Tuesday, Russian Minister of Health Veronika Skvortsova confirmed that 14 people had died with 49 remaining in hospitals after an unidentified explosive device went off between the Institute of Technology and Sennaya Ploschad metro stations at 14:40 local time (11:40 GMT) on Monday. A second unexploded bomb was reportedly deactivated at Ploschad Vostaniya station.

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation into the incident and a three-day period of mourning has been declared by St. Petersburg authorities, beginning on Tuesday.

Kyrgyzstan-born 22-year-old Akbarzhon Dzhalilov has been identified as the bomb suspect.
