Germany: FinMin announces higher funding for fight against money laundering, terrorism
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble announced that more funds will be allocated to fight against both money-laundering and the financing of "terror" organisations, while visiting an exhibition at the Cologne-Bonn Airport on Tuesday displaying the most eye-catching items confiscated by German customs in 2016.
Schauble said that “There is a new, great, important challenge [awaiting] the customs, with the building of centres for the investigation of financial transactions, the so-called 'Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU)” and added “It is about further intensifying the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing, and to make our state better and more powerful.”
Schauble revealed that in the future German customs investigation bureau will take over the FIU unit from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), due to “the expertise of the customs administration”, thus making the job “more efficient."
