Russia: 'It was horrible' - Muslim community respond to St. Petersburg metro bombing

Russian Federation, St. Petersburg
April 4, 2017 at 14:37 GMT -00:00 · Published

Worshippers at St. Petersburg's newly opened Kolomyazhskaya mosque responded to Monday's horrific bomb blast in the city's metro network, which took the lives of 14 people and left 49 injured. Kyrgyzstan-born 22-year-old Akbarzhon Dzhalilov has been identified as the bomb suspect.

Speaking on Tuesday, local Muslim Karina describe the event as she witnessed it: "I was really close to the scene myself. If I would not have been late, I would have been in the exact same carriage. I was shaking. People walking out from there were not in their right mind. This is horrible."

Another resident, Igor, said he found the attack "particularly disturbing" as the country hadn't witnessed "such acts for a very long time." His partner went on to state that there was "no fear among people" and "only empathy and support."

Earlier on Tuesday, Russian Minister of Health Veronika Skvortsova confirmed that 14 people had died with 49 remaining in hospitals after an unidentified explosive device went off between the Institute of Technology and Sennaya Ploschad metro stations at 14:40 local time (11:40 GMT) on Monday. A second unexploded bomb was reportedly deactivated at Ploschad Vostaniya station.

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation into the incident and a three-day period of mourning has been declared by St. Petersburg authorities, beginning on Tuesday.
