USA: Syria's political reality needs to be accepted - Spicer

United States, Washington DC
March 31, 2017 at 20:24 GMT -00:00 · Published

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer stated that the US has to accept Syria's political reality, at a press briefing, in Washington DC, on Friday.

In support of US Ambassador Nikki Haley comments that the US "priority is no longer to sit there and focus on getting Assad out." Instead, Spicer maintained that the priority of this administration is to defeat the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), and not to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Spicer stressed that former US President Barack Obama's administration failed to act on opportunities that have now lapsed. He explained, “With respect to Asaad, I mean, there is a political reality, that we have to accept, in terms of where we are right now, we lost a lot of opportunity in the last administration.” He added, “We had an opportunity and we need to focus now defeating ISIS, but the United States has profound priorities in Syria and Iraq, and we made it clear that counter-terrorism, particularly the defeat of ISIS, is foremost amongst those priorities.”

Spicer also commented that US President Donald Trump believes that his former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn should testify, after the Senate Intelligence Committee rejected his request for immunity from prosecution in exchange for being interviewed in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

He also attacked former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, stating if there is "a want to talk about a Russian connection and the substance" that Clinton’s administration should be the focus, going on to say that Clinton was "getting personal calls from Vladimir Putin."
