Switzerland: Opposition 'doesn't want to fight terrorism' - Jaafari

Switzerland, Geneva
March 31, 2017 at 18:47 GMT -00:00 · Published

Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations Bashar Jaafari spoke to the press at the Palace of Nations in Geneva, Friday, where he stated that the Syrian government was "hoping to score further progress, or any progress, at least, in this round, but that never happened."

The press conference, which came as the fifth round of the UN-brokered intra-Syrian peace talks concluded, saw Jaafari blame the Syrian opposition groups for this lack of progress.

"Unfortunately, this round has concluded and we haven't received a response from the other parties or platforms regarding any of our papers," he said, adding that "this is no longer a surprise. These people don't want to fight terrorism."

He went on to compare opposition groups to contestants on reality television programs, where "contestants try to win a vote."

The diplomat also stressed on the importance of the Russian and Iranian efforts in the upcoming international meeting on Syria in the Kazakh capital Astana, saying that "the Iranian and Russian efforts exerted to make the Astana meetings successful are highly important in scoring progress in the upcoming Geneva talks."

Another round of intra-Syrian peace talks are expected to take place in Geneva in mid-May after the international meeting on Syria in Astana.
