Armenia: Sargsyan stresses national security concerns in final campaign rally
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan addressed voters on the final day of his electoral campaign ahead of the country's parliamentary elections, at a rally in Yerevan on Friday.
Sargsyan drew particular attention to national defence concerns, saying that each vote in the elections is "the key to new arms and armoured vehicles, to new defence plans and the effective deployment of troops."
He also emphasised the particular importance that the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, a disputed territory between Armenia and Azerbaijan, should play in a voter’s decision-making, stating that the elected leader should be able to "support the efforts of the OSCE's Minsk Group, to ensure the development of the peace process, with a fair decision as its endpoint."
Sargsyan is Chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia and has served two terms as President of Armenia since 2008.
The parliamentary elections will take place on April 2 and will shift the country from having a semi-presidential system to being a parliamentary republic.
