Indonesia: Thousands of Muslims call for Jakarta's Christian governor to be sacked

Thousands of Muslims marched on the streets of Jakarta, on Friday, to demand that the city’s Christian governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, commonly known as Ahok, be sacked over blasphemy allegations.

The rally, led by the hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), saw protesters chanting and waving Indonesian flags, amidst a heavy police presence.

FPI supporters are demanding that a Muslim leads Jakarta as governor instead of Ahok. He has been accused of blasphemy after citing a verse from the Quran, Al-Maifah 51, during the Jakarta gubernatorial election campaign.

Criticism towards the Jakarta governor began after he implied that the Quran's Al Maidah 51 verse, focusing on Muslim alliances with Jews and Christians, could be used to justify the idea that Muslim should not be led by a non-Muslim.

FPI and their allies have pressed for Purnama's incarceration for the alleged offences, with the governor's supporters claiming that he is a victim of anti-Chinese and anti-Christian sentiment in a Muslim majority city.
