Serbia: Guns, Gandalf and golden thrones - is this Serbia’s future president?

Serbia, Mladenovac
March 31, 2017 at 01:43 GMT -00:00 · Published

Clad in a Roman emperor-style crown, Serbian presidential candidate Ljubisa Beli Preletacevic was carried on a golden throne by two burley security guards as he addressed thousands of his supporters in Mladenovac on Thursday, ahead of the April 2 elections. Despite being a fictional character running under a parody campaign masterminded by 25-year-old student Luka Maksimovic, the candidate is currently second in the latest polls.

The event parodied other political rallies as well as Serbian society itself. Fake snipers positioned themselves on buildings and Beli shot his own fake pistol between his addresses to the crowd.

Many of Preletacevic's fans donned white clothing in tribute to Beli, which means 'white' in Serbian.

One supporter, Dragutin Micanovic, said the reason for Beli's rapid rise to stardom is because he is "a good quality man and people recognise it."

"The people are the ones who make decisions, people accept what is good and natural", Micanovic added.

The satirical character rides a white horse in his campaign videos and has compared himself to Gandalf from Lord of the Rings. The character openly says that he desires money and hopes to win through corruption.

The inventor of the character 'Beli' is a 25 year old student called Luka Maksimovic. According to the latest polls, the alter-ego could win around 11 percent of votes. He is ranked second place, following Prime Minister and presidential candidate Aleksandar Vucic, who is likely to win the elections.
