Switzerland: Peace talks will continue until Syria has ‘territorial integrity’ - Russian Deputy FM

Gennady Gatilov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister (English): "It was an interesting discussion. We had a very open exchange of views of the current stage of the negotiations. And we came to the common conclusion that that we would be very much in favour of having positive results for this round and continuation of discussions in order to reach the goal of independence and territorial integrity in Syria, [a] pluralistic state and all these questions should be decided by Syrians themselves in the course of the negotiations."

Gennady Gatilov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister (English): "Actually, we did not discuss this; this issue was not raised. I've heard of them that the HNC delegation would be in favour of discussing the four agenda items, presented by Special Envoy Mistura."

Gennady Gatilov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister (English): "I wouldn't describe it as desperate. The cessation of hostilities regime is maintaining. You know the decision was taken in Astana and there are 3 guarantors of the cessation of hostilities regime. And our objective monitoring demonstrates and confirms that the cessation of hostility regime of ceasefire is more or less maintaining."

Journalist (English): "Well, maybe 90 percent would be good."

Gennady Gatilov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister (English): "90 percent - we are going there but here we need the support and the involvement of all the parties including external players, not only the three guarantors, but some other countries who also have influence on the parties on the ground. Thank you."

The Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, Gennady Gatilov, said that discussions between Syrian government allies and Syrian opposition groups – under the umbrella of the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) – will continue until "the goal of independence and territorial integrity" has been reached, speaking at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Wednesday.

In an interview after meeting with the HNC during the fifth round of intra-Syrian peace talks, Gatilov iterated that both delegations are "very much in favour of having positive results" and went on to stress that questions around governance in Syria "should be decided by Syrians themselves."

Answering a question about restoring a ceasefire agreement, Gatilov stated, "We are going there but here we need the support and the involvement of all the parties including external players, not only the three guarantors, but some other countries who also have influence on the parties on the ground.”

The four agenda items that are to be discussed during this round of talks are: governance in Syria, a new constitution for the nation, elections and the issue of terrorism.
