USA: World nuclear ban would leave North Korea 'cheering' – US Ambassador Haley
US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said a worldwide nuclear ban would leave North Korea "cheering," speaking in New York City, Monday.
"We have to be realistic" said Haley, asking "is there anyone that believes that North Korea would agree to a ban on nuclear weapons" going on that in the end "the people we represent would be the ones at risk."
Acting President of the 71st session of the General Assembly, Masud Bin Momen, speaking at the United Nations headquarters made the case for a ban saying "one misstep, one poor judgement, one technical failure, or one determined non-state actor gaining access to nuclear weapons would lead to unimaginable devastation."
The US, France and the UK were all not in attendance at the UN meeting to discuss a new treaty, announced in October, on banning nuclear weapons. 120 others endorsed a plan for a legally binding nuclear ban.
