Peru: 'Tattoo for Peru' - Lima tattoo parlour organises donation drive for flood victims

A Lima-based tattoo parlour called ‘Ink Art Tattoo’ gave away free tattoos on Friday, to those who would donate relief packages for people affected by the recent deadly floods in the country.

The initiative 'Tatuando por el Peru' [Tattooing for Peru]' drew the attention of many people, prompting a huge queue outside the parlour, along with a big pile of donations in the form of batches with water bottles, flour and oil.

The owner of the parlour, Luis Velasquez 'Carnero', said "The idea came up as it happened to many other Peruvians. Arriving home, turning on the TV, checking your smart phone and seeing every tragedy, disaster, people losing their homes, their possessions... For that reason I decided to create 'Tatuando por el Peru' [Tattooing for Peru]."

A student participant in the action, Mayra Pinas, added "Thank God it [the floods] did not reach my home, although it literally passed next to it. This is the reason why I am collaborating with different campaigns. This one gained my attention as I always wanted to get tattoo, but I didn't have a good enough reason until this occasion."

The deadly floods, set off by unseasonal heavy rainfall, are the worst Peru has seen in decades, leaving scores of people dead, hundreds injured and thousands homeless.
