Russia: 'The only rule is to survive' – BRUTAL real-life Russian 'Hunger Games' set to hit screens

SOT, Ruptly journalist (Russian): "But you will not participate"?

SOT, Elena Zhernova, Participant, Games2:Winter (Russian): "No, I could participate in this".

Let the games begin! Deep in the Siberian forest, a movement is growing, a harsh struggle for survival beckons to those who would take the challenge – welcome to the real-life Russian Hunger Games!

This summer, the reality-TV show ‘Games2:Winter’ will hit screens in Russia, with millions of spectators set to follow 30 brave participants in a no-holds-barred survival contest staged in the Siberian wilderness.

Left to fend for themselves in the barren landscapes of Russia’s Novosibirsk Region, contestants will be dropped off in the bear-infested taiga forest in July 2017, with the goal of sticking out the harshest of conditions for a whopping nine months. The show’s creator Evgeniy Pyatkovskiy gave a chilling elaboration on the show’s concept from the depths of the Siberian forest, Monday, stating that “the show has no rules at all; the only rule is to survive."

If the participants can hack the brutal Russian outback until April 2018, they have the chance of getting their hands on a share of the competition’s prize money – a massive €1.5 million ($1.6 million).

Followed by some 2,000 fixed cameras, and broadcast live online 24/7, contestants must pay around €150,000 ($162,000) to enter the forest, and be deemed ‘mentally stable’ before being able to participate.

As Pyatkovskiy explained, perhaps the most shocking part of the competition is that “everything is allowed”. Showing “all the best and all the worst sides of a human nature," there is a strong potential that women and men could end up in hand-to-hand combat, according to one of future contestant Elena Zhernova who admits she would not back off.

Aside from the struggle of surviving off larvae, hunting animals with make-shift weapons, and outrunning bears, the only way that participants will be able to escape the forest is by hitting a panic button. They will be immediately evacuated and unable to return to the forest.

Despite the show strictly adhering to Russian law, the rules of human engagement will be stretched to the maximum over the grueling nine months, with glamorous actresses, military men, and swimming instructors among the many set to battle it out to become millionaires. May the odds be in their favour, and for all those watching, let’s have a happy Games2:Winter.
