Macedonia: Thousands of nationalists protest against EU in Skopje

the Republic of North Macedonia, Skopje
March 21, 2017 at 23:10 GMT -00:00 · Published

Thousands of Macedonian nationalists protested against European Union representatives and the alleged interference of foreign countries in domestic politics in Skopje, Tuesday. The protest came after EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Johannes Hahn rejected proposals to have a meeting with the nationalists, who have been demonstrating for 21 days.

One of the organisers of the protest, Bogdan Ilievski, said "We've had enough from commissioners who hide from the people of united Macedonia. We are almost 50,000 people here, and in the rest of the country around 200,000, taking it to the streets at this moment.”

TV personality, Darko Mijalkovski, added "Send our best regards to your friends in Brussels and tell them that we won't give up on Macedonia. Long live the Republic of Macedonia."

The latest wave of pro-government nationalist protests follows a two year-long period of anti-government protests, which resulted in elections in December 2016. Despite the successful conclusion of the election process, the country is still without a new government and parliament, as the parties are still struggling to form coalitions, resulting in the further deepening of political crisis in the country.

Macedonia has been in political turmoil for more than two years, with numerous waves of opposition protests taking place across the country following leaks of taped conversations from high-ranking government officials and ministers, including the former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski. The leaks reportedly reveal electoral fraud, assassination cover ups and heavy interference in media policies and editorials.

A special prosecution team was formed to deal exclusively with wiretapping and has recently issued its first two criminal charges - one against Gruevski, another one against former Minister of Transport and Communications Mile Janakieski.
