
Syria: Russian and EU politicians hold 3 hour meeting with Assad
Members of Russia's State Duma and members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) met with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus, Monday.
The meeting, which lasted for three hours, was led by Deputy Chair of the State Duma Vladimir Vasilyev on behalf of the Russian delegation, and the President of PACE Pedro Agramunt on behalf of the European delegation. They were joined by deputies from Russia’s State Duma and politicians from Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, Serbia and Belgium.
Exact details of the meeting are yet to be released though on Monday the Russian State Duma Deputy Leonid Slutski anticipated the agenda would include discussions regarding a new Syrian constitution as well as the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
The Russian delegation also held talks with the Speaker of the People's Council of Syria Hadiya Abbas.
The visit was planned to assess the impact of ongoing assistance by the Russian Armed Forces in the country, and to assess requirements for humanitarian aid and assistance.
