Mexico: Cuban migrants stranded in Mexico as US tighten up border control

Mexico, Nuevo Laredo
March 17, 2017 at 04:44 GMT -00:00 · Published

Some 450 Cuban migrants remained stranded in the Mexican city of Nuevo Laredo on the US-Mexico border, Thursday, as hopes that U.S President Trump will reinstate the so-called "wet-foot, dry foot" policy begin to dwindle.

Former President Barack Obama ended the 22-year-old policy, which previously allowed Cuban migrants without visas to legally remain in the U.S once they reached American soil, on January 12.

There were hopes among Cuban migrants that Trump would reinstate the law following his inauguration, however no announcement has been made.

Hundreds of Cubans have since remained stranded in Mexico. One migrant hoping to get to the U.S recalled how he tried to flee Cuba seven times, and was in turn punished with a fine of 3,500 pesos (3,250 EUR). Now, if he crosses the border he risks being deported and sent back again. So far 680 Cubans have been deported since the decades-old policy was revoked in January.

Many Cubans spend their days in Nuevo Laredo's Plaza Juarez, unable to find work without the relevant permits. One man said that many people in Cuba just have a "little dream of freedom", and said that he believes that many people who want to leave are wrongly treated as "counter-revolutionary".

While in Mexico, many Cubans risk maltreatment by authorities. On Wednesday, three Cubans held at the Siglo XXI detention centre for immigrants in Tapachula accused authorities of beating them while on hunger strike. In a separate incident in February, local press reported that several Cubans in the detention centre were beaten for shouting "freedom" and "free Cuba."
