UK: Rostov fans invite Man-U supporters to World Cup with open arms

FC Rostov fans rolled out the welcome mat for their English counterparts in the run-up to next year's World Cup by unfurling a banner with the message 'Keep calm and come to the World Cup 2018', during their match against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Thursday. Cell phone footage from a fan inside the stadium captured a festive anticipation of next year's big sporting event.

From the away stand, friendly fans were seen waving the banner, which played on the iconic 'Keep Calm and Carry On' poster produced by the British government during the Second World War.

One Rostov supporter said that he was keen to see England fans come over to Russia for the World Cup and experience "real Russian hospitality". Refuting claims that there are heated tensions between the two sides, a United fan said that he felt that there was no rivalry off the pitch, "afterwards, we're sharing a town, we're sharing a city, and that's the idea of football really, just to be together."

The act of friendship follows on from the first leg of the match which took place in Rostov last week, when Russian fans handed out blankets to Manchester United supporters who made the trip over for the game. Coloured in Manchester's signature red, the souvenir blankets were emblazoned with the fixture, location and the words 'Gentlefan, Russian Warm Welcome'.

Following the 1-1 draw between the two sides last week, the second leg of the game was won by Manchester United 1-0 with Juan Mata scoring the decisive goal. The 2-1 aggregate victory puts United through to the Europa League quarter-finals which will take place on Friday.
