Netherlands: Brussels elite should think twice - Wilders warns on election day

Netherlands, The Hague

Geert Wilders, Leader of Party for Freedom (PVV) (English): “Well once again I'm no Donald Trump, you cannot compare me to Donald Trump but most of the press certainly the Dutch press are not too positive and helpful – they don’t have to be helpful – but still very critical. But that’s OK, they are independent. It will be a tough force – it has already been a tough force against us - but at the end of the day the people decide. It’s election day, it’s the crown jewel of any democracy today, and the people decide whatever they want to decide. And finally, at the end of the day if they make a party strong it's also democracy, or if they make a party weak it's also their decision. So despite any forces against us it’s the people who are in charge for we are still a democracy.

Journalist (English): “Who in Europe should be afraid of a victory for your party?”

Geert Wilders, Leader of Party for Freedom (PVV) (English): "Nobody should be afraid, everybody should be very happy if we would get a lot of votes. I don’t know if we will win the elections, but I hope we have a good result, and it’s the people at the end of the day I believe who win. I’m not fighting against any people or whatever, so nobody has to be afraid, but the elite, perhaps the elite in Brussels, might think twice before opening a bottle of champagne if we have a good result today."

Far-right nationalist candidate Geert Wilders of the Party for Freedom (PVV) warned that the elite in Brussels should “think twice before opening a bottle of champagne” if his party polled well in the general election after casting his vote in The Hague, Wednesday.

Responding to journalists’ questions alluding to the divisive nature of his campaign, Wilders said that “nobody should be afraid, everybody should be very happy,” perhaps with the exception of “the elite in Brussels”.

Wilders rejected comparisons to US President Donald Trump and berated the Dutch media for the coverage he received, stating that “most of the press, certainly the Dutch press, are not so positive and helpful.”

The popular vote is predicted to be a close race between ruling Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and Wilders. 150 members of the House of Representatives will be elected in total.
