Turkey: Erdogan blames Netherlands for 1995 Srebrenica massacre

Turkey, Ankara
March 14, 2017 at 21:09 GMT -00:00 · Published

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held the Netherlands responsible for the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, speaking in an address to health sector workers in Ankara, Tuesday.

Erdogan said: "We know the Netherlands and the Dutch from the Srebrenica massacre. We know how sneaky they are and how they slaughtered 8,000 Bosniaks there." The comments followed Turkey's suspension of high-level diplomatic relations with the Netherlands on Monday.

Erdogan also addressed German Chancellor Angela Merkel by saying that Germany was "no different from them [the Netherlands]." He added that Turkey is "not expecting too much from you. They're attacking with their horses and dogs, and you are also attacking with your horses and dogs."

Around 8,000 Muslim boys and men were killed by Bosnian Serb forces in Srebrenica in July 1995 and buried in mass graves. Dutch UN peacekeepers have been accused of failing to protect the victims. Thousands of women, children and elderly people were forcibly deported. The killings occurred shortly before the end of the 1992-1995 Bosnian War.

The ongoing Turkey-Netherlands spat broke out after Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu's plane was prevented from landing in Rotterdam, where he was intending to hold a rally garnering support for a 'Yes' vote in Turkey's upcoming constitutional referendum.
