Turkey: Water cannon blasts protesters on 22nd anniversary of Gazi Quarter Riots

Police fired water cannon and deployed tear gas on protesters who were commemorating 22 years since the Gazi Quarter riots, in the Gazi neighbourhood of Istanbul on Sunday.

Protesters demanded justice for the 23 people who were killed and 400 who were injured in the 1995 Gazi Quarter riots. Demonstrators held a banner and blocked a street. Police tried to disperse them moving in with a water cannon, blasting protesters back.

The 1995 riots were triggered by gunmen who attacked cafes and a cake shop from a car in the Gazi district, killing Dede Halil Kaya, a 61-year-old Alevi religious leader and injuring 25 others. The gunmen escaped and were never caught. The shooting lead to large gatherings by the Alevi residents of the Gazi Quarter who protested outside the area's police station. Police fired into the crowd, killing one protester and starting three days of widespread and violent clashes.
