Russia: Germany concerned about possible new 'arms race' in Europe - FM Gabriel

Russian Federation, Moscow
March 9, 2017 at 12:54 GMT -00:00 · Published

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel expressed concern over the possibility of a new arms race emerging in Europe, during a press conference held alongside his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, Thursday.

Gabriel noted that “having had certain discussions with both sides on the large potential of the Russian Armed Forces in the Baltic states, in Poland, or a serious increase in the US defence budget,” Berlin is concerned about coming close to “another spiral of a new arms race [emerging in Europe].”

Despite the concerns, the German foreign minister expressed hope that the countries would be able to control the process and “embark on the path of disarmament."

Commenting on the Ukrainian crisis, Lavrov argued that the work on the roadmap on the implementation of the Minsk agreements is being “dragged out” and that it should be accelerated. In turn, Gabriel noted that “the minimal premises for a successful political process [on resolving the Ukrainian crisis]” are not being met, including such premises as “the ceasefire, heavy weaponry withdrawal, humanitarian aid, access for the Red Cross [and] prisoner exchange.”

During the press conference, the Russian foreign minister also urged to put an end to the trade blockade in the eastern region of Donbass, stressing that “the ongoing blockade of Donbass, which has been organised by nationalist, if not to say Nazi, battalions and other organisations, is unacceptable” and that Kiev should do its utmost to stop the blockade which has led to disruptions in the transportation of coal from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR/DNR) and Lugansk People's Republic (LPR/LNR).
