Kyrgyzstan: Medvedev accuses Belarusian PM of ‘blackmail’ over gas payments

Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek
March 7, 2017 at 12:51 GMT +00:00 · Published

Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev said there was “no need” for Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states to “practice in calculations” of Russian gas prices and made clear that non-membership of the bloc would lead to European-level pricing at a Session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Bishkek, Tuesday.

Belarusian Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov claimed that Belarus’ disputes with Russia were affecting their work in the EAEU, saying “problems in bilateral relations fundamentally affect our influence in the multilateral integration processes.”

Medvedev countered that members of the EAEU should not shift their bilateral issues on to the bloc at the collective expense of the Union likening this to “blackmail.”

"The implementation of achieved agreements and the whole integration process are often held hostage to the specifically understood national interests by some nations," he stated, going on “nobody is holding anyone here.”

Earlier in 2016 Belarus claimed that the price for Russian gas was too expensive and unilaterally reduced it’s payments leading Russia to respond by decreasing duty-free oil supplies to Belarus. On February 3, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said the country had turned to the EAEU court over Russia's reduction in oil supplies due to the issues of the gas debt.
