Ukraine: Hundreds protest ongoing trade blockade of eastern Ukraine

Ukraine, Kramatorsk
March 6, 2017 at 19:53 GMT -00:00 · Published

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Kramatorsk, Donetsk on Monday to protest the ongoing trade blockade of eastern Ukraine led by Ukrainian activists.

Protesters waved Ukrainian flags, sung the national anthem and held banners reading “Blockade is a path into the darkness. We need job security, heat and light.”

Ukrainian activists and fighters from volunteer battalions began the blockade in December, cutting off freight railway lines from traversing the Lugansk - Lysychansk - Popasna route in protest against ongoing trade with the self-proclaimed republics.

The trade blockade has led to disruptions in the transportation of coal from the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR/DNR) and Lugansk People's Republic (LPR/LNR), prompting the government to declare a state of emergency.

Last week, DPR and LPR leaders Alexander Zakharchenko and Igor Plotnitsky issued a joint statement demanding Kiev lift the blockade before March 1, noting that failure to do so would mean the supply of coal to Ukraine would be halted and an "external management" would be appointed "at all enterprises under Ukrainian jurisdiction operating in the DPR and the LPR."
