Greece: Molotov cocktails fly as hundreds protest education reforms in Athens

Greece, Athens
March 6, 2017 at 16:51 GMT -00:00 · Published

Students protesting against the Greek government’s education reforms threw Molotov cocktails at parliament in central Athens on Monday, during a 250-strong demonstration.

Masked protesters hurled the flaming bottles at the parliament buildings before being dispersed by police. Students also marched through the streets flying banners and chanting. No arrests were reported.

The Greek government has introduced education cutbacks, where fewer teachers are being hired and children spend less time in school.

Athens is currently locked in bailout talks with the IMF and the European Union. It is still awaiting the latest injection of bailout cash after the second bailout review dragged on for months, mainly due to differences between the EU and the IMF over the country’s fiscal targets. The lenders want the country to achieve and maintain a primary budget surplus of 3.5 percent of GDP beyond 2018.
