Russia: Federation Council and European Parliament MEPs praise Astana talks
A video conference titled 'The peaceful future of Syria: a view from Moscow and Brussels" was held on Wednesday from the Russian capital, to discuss the peace process and further steps on cooperation between the European Union and Russia on solving the conflict.
From Brussels, European Parliament Deputies Jiri Mastalka, from the Czech Republic, and Catalin-Sorin Ivan, from Romania, took part while members of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev and Andrei Klimov spoke from Moscow.
Those gathered praised the Astana talks held by Iran, Turkey and Russia. Chairman of the Upper House Committee for Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev stated that there were "no insuperable obstacles [for any country] to join already reached agreements", adding that the Astana format could "provide a real field for cooperation between Russia and EU countries".
Mastalka echoed his sentiments saying "it would be nice if the EU understood that it needs to join in this debate more intensively".
This is the second Russian-held video conference on the Syrian settlement; the first was organised between Moscow, Astana and Damascus on February 16.
