Switzerland: No immediate breakthrough expected at Syria peace talks - de Mistura

UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura announced on Wednesday that he was not expecting 'an immediate breakthrough' at Intra-Syrian peace talks, which are due to restart in Geneva on Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference at the Palais des Nations, Staffan de Mistura noted that he was expecting the beginning of "a series of rounds, that should enable to go much more in depth in the substantive issues that are required for a political solution in Syria."

At the same time the UN mediator stressed that he would be refusing any preconditions, voiced by the participating sides at the new round of negotiations. He declined to elaborate on the format of the forth round of Geneva talks, saying just that he would start with bilateral meetings on Thursday.

De Mistura also stressed the importance of the Astana meetings, calling to keep the momentum of the reached cease-fire in order to go further in the Syrian settlement. In this regards, the UN Special Envoy announced that Russia had officially asked the Syrian government to halt air strikes during the current round of peace talks, urging other parties, who had influence on the opposition, to contribute to the cease-fire. Commenting on his own status, Staffan de Mistura rejected rumours of his possible soon resignation.
