Russia: 'Too early to start talking about successors' to Vitali Churkin - Kosachev

Russian Federation, Moscow
February 21, 2017 at 12:08 GMT -00:00 · Published

Chairman of Russia's Upper House Committee for Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev spoke in Moscow, Tuesday, following the death of late Russian Ambassador to the UN, Vitali Churkin, who passed away in New York City on Monday.

"I believe it's too early to start talking about successors," stated Kosachev, adding that "I believe it is not the right time yet but the Russian representation to the United Nations is well qualified, is professional enough, to overcome the problems of today."

"The work will be continued and we do have time to find a good solution for the successor of Mr. Churkin. That will not be an easy task but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia does have many competent people to replace Mr. Churkin, no doubt about that," continued Kosachev.

Vitali Churkin was serving as Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN when he passed away in New York City earlier on Monday. Churkin was rushed to New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan after he allegedly suffered heart problems at the offices of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation on East 67th Street.

The 64-year-old had been Russia's UN representative since 2006. Before he took the post he was served as Ambassador at Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation (2003-2006), as well as Ambassador to Canada (1998-2003), and Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation to the talks on Former Yugoslavia (1992-1994), among other top level diplomatic posts.

Passing away one day before his 65th birthday, Churkin is survived by his wife and two children.
