Germany: De Maiziere condemns regional non-compliance with Afghan deportations

Germany, Berlin
February 20, 2017 at 20:42 GMT -00:00 · Published

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maziere condemned regional non-compliance with federal orders on deporting Afghans, during a press conference, in Berlin, Monday. The press conference followed de Maziere's tour through a deportation centre at the Schoenefeld Airport, in Berlin. The German interior minister was accompanied by Berlin Interior Senator Andreas Geisel and Brandenburg Interior Minister Karl-Heinz Schroeter.

During the press conference, de Maziere echoed German Chancellor Angela Merkel's earlier remarks hitting out the demands from the state government of Schleswig-Holstein for a nationwide halt to deportations, labelling them as "wrong" and criticising their alleged non-compliance with federal orders on deporting Afghans.

De Maiziere also added that he was "surprised that another state [North Rhine-Westphalia], whose Minister President [Hannelore Kraft] had asked the government, and specifically me, to be more resolute with deportations, announces a day later that this does not count for Afghanistan."

Earlier in January, de Maiziere put forward the proposal in his guest contribution to the German newspaper the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) to reorganise the country's security structure by giving more power to the federal government as a way to tackle terror threats and manage the influx of asylum seekers to Germany.

De Maiziere's proposal suggested the extension of the authority of the federal police force and called to set up so-called federal exit centers to be created in a bid to increase responsibility for the deportation of rejected asylum seekers.
