German: Entrepreneur set to give you butterflies in stomach with insect-based delicacies

Germany, Witszeeze

German entrepreneur Folke Dammann runs a business selling insect-based sweet delicacies from the kitchen of his home. Dammann presented one of his delicacies, chocolate-covered worms and grasshoppers with strawberries, in his home kitchen in Witszeeze near Hamburg on Friday.

Arguing why people should eat insects, Dammann said "on one hand it tastes good. Everywhere, in other countries, it is a very popular and completely normal food, so we shouldn't exclude them. Because we eat crabs, we eat shellfish, when it comes to insects everyone say, 'why insects?' But they taste good, even in a sweet variation. There is a vast number of ways they can be prepared. That is of course the culinary reason behind it, it tastes really good."

Dammann added, "Other factors which play a part are that they're sustainable and ecological. Insects have very valuable proteins. When they are grilled for example, when dry, it has nearly 70 percent of protein. That is of course a huge amount and that is a very high quality animal protein, which is comparable with beef, pork or poultry protein. So it is in every case a good thing, and it is tasty."

Due to a ban on breeding insects for human consumption in Germany, Dammann imports the insects from neighbouring France.
