Indonesia: 'Ahok' leads exit polls but runoff likely in Jakarta’s governor elections
Unofficial preliminary results from Jakarta‘s governor elections, Wednesday, suggested the incumbent governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama held a small lead over his nearest contender but was unlikely to secure the necessary 50% of the vote.
Independent polling firms estimated that Purnama, commonly known by his nickname ‚Ahok‘ gained around 43% of the vote while former Education Minister, Anies Baswedan’s had 40%.
If neither candidate reaches half of the votes a second round of will take place in mid-April.
Jakarta’s governor election campaign has ignited religious divisions within the country as Purnama faces a blasphemy trial amid allegations he insulted the Koran whilst campaiging. The allegations sparked a series of protests by hardline Muslim groups who have denounced the Christian, ethnic Chinese Purnama.
