Montenegro: Opposition leaders lose parliamentary immunity over coup-plot allegations

Montenegro, Podgorica
February 15, 2017 at 17:53 GMT -00:00 · Published

Around 1,000 people took to the streets of Podgorica on Wednesday, to prevent the arrest of opposition Democratic Front (DF) coalition members of parliament, Andrija Mandic and Milan Knezevic. The pair are accused of forming a criminal group in order to destabilise the country and overthrow the government of former-Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic.

The protest came after Montenegro's parliament voted unanimously in favour of Special Prosecutor Milivoje Katnic's demands that the immunity of both Mandic and Knezevic is dropped, so that they could be tried on grounded suspicions of plotting a coup that would have allegedly taken place on October 16 - the day of the parliamentary elections.

Before entering the parliament with his collaborates, Mandic addressed the crowd to deny such allegations, saying "They are lying and we have to repeat this everywhere. They are lying. They are fabricating and planting [the idea] that the fake coup has to do anything with any single member of the Democratic Front. They are lying and planting [the idea] that any one of us has contact and is acquainted to any person who's sought with an arrest warrant."

The DF organised several protests against Djukanovic in 2016, accusing him of corruption, repression and media control. The spark that ignited the protest was Djukanovic's increasing pro-NATO inclination, which DF is opposed to.
