Hundreds of people joined the Jewish Rally for Refugees at the Castle Clinton National Monument, in New York's Battery Park, Sunday, to denounce US President Donald Trump's executive order on immigration that bars travellers from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the US.

The demonstration was organised by the Jewish Rally for Refugees (HIAS). Following the rally, the protesters marched through the streets of New York City, while chanting and holding banners condemning Trump's immigration policies.

On January 27, Trump signed an executive order on immigration which bars travellers from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen from entering the United States for 90 days, while suspending the US refugee programme for 120 days and indefinitely blocking Syrian refugees from entering the US.

Trump has maintained that the restrictions should not be dubbed a 'Muslim ban,' despite it only being brought into effect for these seven countries, all of which have a majority Muslim population, and exempting non-Muslim citizens of the seven countries.

Earlier this week, the US District Court of Appeals announced its decision to uphold the suspension against Trump's travel ban, after Seattle Federal Judge, James L. Robart, had issued a temporary nationwide ruling against the ban.
