Germany: Ukrainian MP defaces monument at German embassy in Kiev, government reports
A member of the Ukrainian parliament "entered" Germany's embassy in Kiev in order to damage a monument, a spokesperson of the German Foreign Office stated at the Federal Press Conference in Berlin, Wednesday.
Martin Schafer, spokesperson of the Foreign Office, said that he "Some people, some Ukrainians entered the premises of the German embassy. And then we tried to hold the Member of Parliament from doing what he did, which is besmearing this historical part of the Wall with red paint, but we were rebutted by him, making references to his (diplomatic) immunity."
Schafer added that he "deeply regrets that a delegate of political Ukraine, a member of parliament of the Rada, acts in this way. We consider it to be inadequate and wish that this won't happen again in the future."
The attack is believed to be caused by comments of Ernst Reichel, the German ambassador to Ukraine. In an interview earlier this week, Reichel had suggested that local elections in the warn-torn Donbass region could also be held before a withdrawal of pro-Russian troops in the occupied zone.
