Brazil: Murders and looting skyrocket in Espirito Santo amid police strike

Brazil, Cachoeira de Itapemirim
February 8, 2017 at 13:53 GMT -00:00 · Published

Over 87 people have died due to violent attacks in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo since Saturday, after police went on strike for increased pay one day prior, leaving the streets open to mass looting and crime. Military personnel were on site in the municipality of Cachoeira de Itapemirim, Tuesday, with troops being sent in to replace local law enforcement offers in a bid to stop the widespread robbery and violence.

Authorities could be seen taking bodies from the local hospital to a morgue, with scenes of damaged shop facades and random stop-and-searches taking place on the streets of the Espirito Santo municipality. Local schools, municipal parks, and health services have been shut down in response to the crime wave.

The Espirito Santo Court of Justice has since declared the police strike illegal, promising police associations associated with the action a fine of R$ 100,000 (US $32, 080, €29,979) if they do bring their members back to work. However, so far, police have reportedly spurned the court order.
