Israel: Turkish tourism minister makes first high-ranking visit to Israel since Mavi Marmara attack

Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Nabi Avci took part in a press conference with his Israeli counterpart Yariv Levin in Tel Aviv on Tuesday. He is the first high-ranking Turkish official to take a trip to the country since the attack on the Mavi Marmara humanitarian aid ship, May 2010.

Avci said that "improving our relationship in tourism field will undoubtedly make a significant contribution to peace". The minister also expressed hope that tourism levels between the two countries would increase as a result.

Levin said he believed tourism to be "the best bridge between our nations", adding: "I think that the stronger that Israel and Turkey are and the stronger the relationship between our countries and our people, the more stable the overall situation in our region is."

Diplomatic ties between Turkey and Israel were suspended after Israeli troops opened fire on a Turkish aid ship 'Mavi Marmara' in international waters in 2010, killing ten Turks on board. The countries agreed on the compensation for families of those killed, a formal apology, and a restoration of Turkey and Israel's formal diplomatic relationship.
