Spain: People have the right to 'express outrage' over Mas trial - Catalan president

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont spoke out against the trial of former Catalan President Artur Mas at the Palau de la Generalita in Barcelona on Monday. Mas stands accused of civil disobedience for holding an independence referendum in 2014.

"A country which is able to hold a consultation such as the 9-N has a healthier democracy than that of a country which puts on trial those who made it possible" said the president, adding "today is a very important representation for all those who did the 9-N to express our outrage at what has led to this trial."

Puigdemont went on to state that the prosecutors "will find the response of the people, despite all their differences and diversity, stands for dignity. That dignity today, with its noble and loyal attitude, will defend Artur Mas, Joan Ortega and Irene Rigau in front of the tribunal, not kneeling but standing."

Prosecutors are calling for Mas to be disqualified from office for 10 years for going ahead with Catalonia's vote on independence in November 2014, defying an order from Spain's constitutional court which deemed it illegal. Former Vice-President Joana Ortega and former Education Minister Irene Rigau are also standing trial.

In a vote held in Catalan parliament on 9 November 2014, 72 parliamentarians voted in favour of independence from Spain, with only 63 voting against. The Spanish Supreme Court has reportedly opened more than 400 judicial proceedings in relation to the pro-independence vote.
