Germany: 'Refuse this abuse' - Romanian anti-corruption march held in Berlin

Germany, Berlin
February 3, 2017 at 22:54 GMT -00:00 · Published

Around 250 protesters took to the streets of Berlin, Friday, to denounce the changes in the Romanian criminal legislation that protect politicians from corruption charges.

The protesters assembled at the Romanian embassy in the German capital, where they exhibited numerous placards and sung the Romanian anthem before proceeding towards the Brandenburg Gate. Marching along Berlin's main boulevards, the protesters chanted "Refuse this abuse."

A wave of protests have shaken Romania over the last several days: on Thursday some 150,000 people marched in Bucharest against the cabinet led by Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu, who approved criminal law changes after the introduction of an emergency ordinance. Justice Minister Florin Lordache stated that the measures will decriminalise cases of official misconduct where the financial damage is valued at less than $47,800 (€44,290).

Protesters believe that the changes will curb anti-corruption measures. Romania has had 1,170 cases of abuse in office over the last three years, amounting to close to a billion euros worth of damage, according to anti-corruption chief prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi.
