USA: Students start bonfires, smash ATMs, in protest to Breitbart editor's visit

United States, Berkeley

Students violently opposed a visit by Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos in Berkeley, California, on Wednesday night.

Some of the 1,500 demonstrators against the visit broke off from the main demonstration and began smashing ATMs, setting off fireworks and starting a bonfire outside the venue where Yiannopoulos was due to speak. These protests caused the event to be called off two hours before it was set to begin.

Yiannopoulos, an outspoken supporter of US President Donald Trump, had been invited to speak at Berkeley by the university's Republican society.

In a statement, Berkeley College Republicans claimed that the protest against Yiannopoulos' appearance had meant that their "constitutional right to free speech was silenced." During the protest, some protesters carried signs reading "Hate Speech is not free speech", as they claimed to oppose Yiannopoulos' event at their university on grounds of the controversial comments he has made regarding Muslims, women and sexual assault victims.
