Greece: Protesters decry 20-year sentences for monks in Molotov cocktail incident
Ultra-Orthodox believers gathered outside Parliament in Athens, Wednesday, to protest prison terms imposed on eight monks of the Esphigmenou Monastery who used Molotov cocktails against police officers during an eviction of the order's administrative offices in 2013.
Golden Dawn MP Giannis Lagos was also part of the rally, where flyers from his far-right group were handed out. One supporter stated that the state "should not prosecute" the monks and "leave the anarchists free."
A court decision on Jan 27 handed down a 20-year sentences to Abbot Methodios and monk Antypas for throwing a petrol bomb at police trying to evict their monastery. The other six monks were found guilty as accomplices and received sentences of ten years and four months.
